Diffractive production from high energy pion has been used by COMPASS at CERN to study light excited mesons and exotics. Large data samples and new analysis methods now allow to systematically adress the determination of resonance parameters and to gain insights into their decays. This also challenges the isobar model being at the base of most analyses of multibody final states in light and heavy meson decays. The seminar will give an overview on the various novel methods used and on selected results on both, hadronic resonances and the isobaric substructures.
