A novel approach to determine the leading hadronic corrections to the muon g-2 has been recently proposed. It consists in a measurement of the effective electromagnetic coupling in the space-like region at low-momentum transfer. This measurement can be performed at CERN by elastic scattering of high-energy muons on atomic electrons as a function of the squared momentum transfer. Such a new and independent determination of the leading hadronic corrections to the muon g-2 will allow a more stringent test of the Standard Model when compared with the g-2 measurements expected at Fermilab and J-PARC. I will review the status of this proposal.
